Remembrance Day

On 11 Nov we celebrate Remembrance Day. In the eleventh month, on the eleventh day and at the eleventh hour in 1918 The Armistice of the WWI was signed. To celebrate it Harry Rowe made a presentation on 10 Nov. We really enjoyed it.

You can do a listening activity here

English Radio Mallorca and Bonfire Night

English Radio Mallorca came to our school to celebrate Bonfire Night

Laura Penn and Terry Mott from English Radio Mallorca came to our school on Fri 6th Nov to talk to our students about Guy Fawkes and Bonfire Night. They gave us some tips on how we could celebrate it at the Mallorca Cricket Club on Sat 7 Nov.
They also talked about their projects on the island, what working at a radio station is like, and they also told us some anecdotes.
When: 6 Nov at 5:00
Where: Room 4

We would like to thank Laura and Terry for having paid us a visit and for the wonderful job they did. The students enjoyed listening to them. We are very lucky to have such good professionals on the island.

The English Department is astounded, amazed, taken aback, flabbergasted, dumbfounded, stunned, shocked, astonished, bowled over and staggered that we have such wonderful friends...

GuyFawkes

Many popular contemporary verses were written in condemnation of Fawkes. The most well-known verse begins:

Remember, remember the fifth of November,
The gunpowder treason and plot,
I know of no reason
Why the gunpowder treason
Should ever be forgot.

Come and join English Radio Mallorca on stage with great music and entertainers at the Mallorca Cricket Club. BBQ, Pie & Peas, Toffee Apples, Chocolate Fountain, Hog Roast and more. Two bonfires and a great firework display. Entrance fee 5 euros with kids under 14 free. Doors open at 6pm.

Unfortunately Nicky Stixx was not able to make it this time. She sent this note. We hope her son Luke will get well soon.

"I'm afraid I have a problem with tomorrow, as much it upsets me, letting people down, I'm sorry to say that my little boy Luke, is very poorly, we have spent the entire morning at the hospital, they have sent us home without an underlined conclusion, but he is not good at all, therefore, I will have to re-schedule my attendance for another day.
I am exceedingly sorry to let you down at such short notice, but my duties as a mother always come first.
I hope you understand and look forward to re arranging another date.
Kindest regards
Nicky.x"

The Euro Weekly Reporter in Mallorca visited our school.

Mrs Doreen Reeves, the Euro Weekly News (EWN) Reporter in Mallorca visited our school on Tuesday 27 Oct. Among other things, she talked about her job as a EWN reporter, she told us anecdotes and welcomed questions.
The event took place at 19:00 in room 5. The hostess was Miss Cati Mari Seguí.
We would like to thank Mrs Doreen Reeves for her visit. It was a real pleasure to have her in our school. Students were engaged and inspired by her talk. They asked many interesting questions. We would like Mrs Reeve to visit us again soon. We are looking forward to an encore.

On 5 Nov Mrs Doreen Reeves published an article about this event on The Euro Weekly News. We would like to thank her for having written it. We are delighted. It is a very good model for our students.

Euro Weekly at the EOI

Mrs Kate Mentink

On 14 Oct Mrs Kate Mentink, Deputy Mayor and Director of the Foreign Citizens and Tourism Department at Calvia Town Hall, welcomed the students at EOI Calvià to the 2009-2010 academic year. Among other things, she talked about what students of English can do to improve their language skills in the area.
We would like to thank her for having given such an interesting talk. Students were very engaged and asked many interesting questions on issues like foreign residents, tourism, and the past terrorist attack that took place in Palma Nova on 30 July.
Here you will find some quotations from the talk:
"English is one of the most valuable tools that you will have"
"The most valuable thing a society has is people. A society won’t function if people can’t communicate."
"When people speak a language, they can share their ideas and knowledge and pass them on to other speakers of that language"
And talking about the importance of learning a language by using it, she said "If you don’t use it, you lose it"

Here you have some videos from the series Mrs Kate Mentink suggested: Yes, Minister
